The next few posts are from a shoot we did for Y&R Dubai and their new campaign for Land Rover. It had been a long time since Land Rover had done an actual car shoot for the region, and the largest shoot G.O.O.D had ever been put up for — putting nerves and expectations at an incredible high.
We’ve posted a few of the scribbles the agency sent as the brief. The idea was to execute four layouts for the new seven seater LR4 — dune bash with the LR4, and bring seven people to star gaze; off-road in the wadis of Oman, and pack a car full of friends to go fishing. Really simple, sweet way of executing this new feature for what was described as a “Luxury Defender.”
After two days of off-roading, 1a.m. call times, battles against sunrise and sunset, and the constant fear that we were going to bottom out the client’s car (actual client’s vehicle — we couldn’t find anything at the dealership in the right color), Steffen Schraegle, German Car Photographer Extrordinaire, did an incredible job capturing some really magical images. See below how he brought some of these simple scribbles to life. To date, this has been one of my favorite shoots to have been a part of — can’t wait to do it again.

We were invited to work on this project after one production house in Dubai failed, and another turned down the shoot after hearing horror stories from the first. G.O.O.D. had just launched, and I felt like we couldn’t lose. Two days to shoot six layouts for Whiskas — how hard could it be?
At the end of day one, Toufic and I sat with our heads in our hands, arms covered in scratches, realizing that we hadn’t taken one usable shot. Apparently cats don’t like flash, and kids are impatient. We managed to get a back-up cat for the second day, and were lucky enough to squeeze everything in. Client was really happy with the results, but Toufic and I are probably not shooting cats again.
We had three days to shoot ten different ads in locations across Dubai. The brief was a mix of stock & scribbles, showing that they wanted images that captured real moments, and reached out to the huge demographic mix we have in this country. A nice departure from how banking ads are normally shot here. For such a big shoot, we had a surprising lack of drama.
